Pro Futures at RCI

Pro Tennis is coming to town September 24th - October 2nd, and we want you to know all about it. This year's event will start with the qualifying tournament -  September 24th - 26th, followed by the main draw - September 27th - Oct 2nd. The top seed this year is aaaaaAmerican Jesse Witten who is ranked 179 in the world. It is free to watch, so please make room in your schedule to come and see some great tennis.

Housing Needed - If you want to get more involved with the tournament, we are looking for housing for the main draw players. They simply need a place to sleep and some OC hospitality, so if you can help, please let me know. Who knows... you might be housing a future champion. We will also need ball boys and girls for the finals on October 2nd. If you have some children that would like to get up close to the action, please let me know also.

Mixed Member Guest Saturday August 14th.

Just a reminder that this Saturday, we are holding our One Day Mixed Member Guest event, and we have a huge sign up. With the large size of the event, courts on Saturday will be very limited. We will have two challenge courts available and courts in the early afternoon, but the 8:30, 10:00 and 11:30 court availablity will be slim. We still need a few more players to round out some divisions, so if you are interested in playing give me a call and I will do what I can to include you in this great event.

3 Point Balance Drill

3 Point Balance Drill
by Tony Babarino, CPT, AKC
Kettlebell Coach & Joint Mobility Expert

The 3 Point Balance Drill is not only a simple and useful exercise to improve balance while being active, it can reveal issues with controlling balance that you didn’t know you have. Almost all training for the legs happens while both feet are in contact with the ground or while stepping immediately into a lunge. How much time do we spend improving our coordination and control to help make this kind of training more safe and effective? Very little. Probably because we take for granted our ability to move, since it is natural for us and minor active balance issues are easy to miss when you’re not looking for it. Sometimes it is the little things we do for ourselves that make a big difference in the things we put so much attention on. For example, while running or lunging, the better balance control you have while moving, the less energy you use while remaining safe, as an activity is done successfully. If your active balance were very bad, it would take an excessive amount of energy to move well, assuming you can do it all and safely.

In movement, and especially exercise, active balance is king. Without it being best and first in priority, any movement would be a mess which may result in failure to perform a skill or sport properly, leading to various injuries, particularly at the joints.

Try the 3 Point Balance drill in your training. If you can not do it well right away, then clearly, you need it! Become an expert in this simple exercise before you load your body and legs with weight. After all, if you can not perform well with nothing, how you can be better with something? Consider this: do not load the body (with weight) until you can move the body (with nothing but your own bodyweight). The 3 Point Balance drill is just what most of us need, and didn’t know it….until now!

Instructions:

1) Watch the entire video before attempting (see link below). Understand what is going on and what needs to be done. It is deceptively simple in appearance! Wait until you see what you can and can not do!

2) Perform level 1 while staying very close to a safe and secure object (such as a fence, pole, wall, or tree) just in case you need to hang on to prevent yourself from falling. Use it only when you need it. If you use it all the time, you will earn few, if any, benefits.

3) The overall goal is to able to perform each level successfully for a minimum of 30 seconds, and ideally for one full minute, with calm and consistent control before moving onto the next level. Do not move on to the next level until you are good at the one you are not good at! Each level builds on the previous level.

4) Relax and take time to do the 3 point Balance drill. This exercise creates and refines and sophisticates movement skill, nurtures joints, and improves balance. For some, it will build up some strength and endurance as well. This is not intended to be a ‘hard’ exercise. Instead, it is more of a ‘movement challenge’. Training with this exercise is playful in nature, therefore, the calmer you are, and the more you pay attention to the feeling of the exercise, the better you will be sooner!

Try this exercise almost every day, working the level you need to improve upon, either before you start training or playing tennis. Do not attempt afterwards as being fatigued or simply being very active beforehand will reduce the success rate of performing this exercise well.

Good luck in your training! Look out for more tips and ideas from Tony Babarino in the next Sepearman Clubs newsletter!

Lost and Found

Our lost and found is over flowing and will be donated to the Goodwill if not claimed by Sunday, June 27. Please stop by the front desk if you are missing any items.

National 45s Hardcourt Doubles

Mike Kovar and his partner reached the finals of the National 45s Hardcourt doubles tournament in Westlake, CA, after beating the #1 seeded team and before falling to Rick Leach (former #1 player in the world) and Greg Washer. This is Mike's first silver ball, but we expect it won't be his last.

National 65 Hardcourt Results

RCI's Dean Corley and his partner Mike Stewart defended their National 65 Hardcourt doubles title last week by defeating Ken Robinson and Rich Anderson 6-4, 7-6. This is Dean's second national title - both of them coming at RCI. Now, that's a home court advantage!

Gear up for our next hike.. Saturday, July 3rd

This hike should take about 3 to 3 and ½ hours. Yippeee! We are going to start at the bottom by El Moro Ranger Station, hike all the way up to Bommer Ridge (yes, this is the trail that parallels the toll road), and then along the ridge, and back down to the ranger station...

This way we get all of the uphill finished first, and we can do most of the hike out of the sun.

We will be leaving at 7am on the nose from the trailhead in El Moro.

Please email me at nstrother@ca.rr.com if you are interested!!!!

Looking forward to a great turnout!

Don't forget to bring water!

Hiking with Nicola

Hike this Saturday, June 5th! Keeping with our tradition, we will be hiking again this upcoming Saturday morning. We will be starting our hike at El Moro again, and we will be doing the reverse hike than the other week. This hike is just under 4 miles and will take about 1 ½ hours to 2 hours to complete. We will start with a flat walk in the canyon, followed by a gentle "S" like uphill, followed by more flat, and then a steeper downhill overlooking the Pacific Ocean. We will be leaving the RCI parking lot at 6:30 am (on the dot) or meeting at the El Moro parking lot and leaving for our hike at 7am! Please email me at nstrother@ca.rr.com if you are interested. It is a great way to start the weekend, and I look forward to having more people join us. Directions to El Moro: If you don' t want to meet at RCI, directions to the parking lot at El Moro are below. Trailhead: Three miles south of Corona Del Mar, on Pacific Coast Highway, go past the Crystal Cove shopping center, then look for a traffic light signed "School-State Park"-turn left (inland), and proceed past El Moro School to a stop sign-turn right, and proceed uphill, veering right, into the El Moro Canyon/Crystal Cove parking lot near the Park Headquarters building.
